FISHERIES COMMISSION BOARD INAUGURATED


A twelve [12] member board chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Mantey Mensah has been inaugurated to advise the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) on all issues related to the development and management of the fisheries sector.

At the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, Minister for MOFAD, Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye swore the board into office. She revealed that she was looking forward to working with the board.

“It is my desire to work hand in hand with you for the development and management of the sector for the common good of mother Ghana.”

Hon. Afoley Quaye also called on the board to take up the Aquaculture for Food and Jobs project as one of their first assignments.

“I believe one of the immediate assignments the newly inaugurated board is to engage in is the Aquaculture for Food and Jobs which the Ministry is currently developing. It has the potential to increase fish output and create job opportunities for training the youth.”

­­The twelve member board is made up of highly qualified experts and professionals from various fields of study. The board is chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Mantey Mensah who has served the FC for several years, retiring in 2003. He has worked in several countries globally after retiring as a fisheries and aquaculture consultant and specialist.

The board is to (a) prepare and keep under continual review, plans for the management and development of fisheries in waters under the jurisdiction of Ghana;(b) They are to establish priorities for the utilization of fishery resources which will provide the greatest benefits to the country;(c) Ensure the proper conservation of the fishery resources through the prevention of over fishing;(d)  Ensure the monitoring, control and surveillance of the fishery waters;(f) Promote sub regional, regional and international co-operation in fisheries management, among others.
