Minister Fraternizes with Fishers
Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye, has embarked on a familiarization tour of landing beaches in the Dangbe areas of the Greater Accra Region.
The tour, which offered the minister the opportunity to interact and gather useful feedback from key industry players, forms part of the Minister’s situational assessment of the fisheries sector in Ghana.
The first visit took the Hon. Minister to the Ada East District Assembly where she interacted with fishers from Azizanya, Otrokpe, Keunor and Pute. She made her second call at the Ada West District Assembly here she engaged with fishers from Goi, Anyaman, Akplamanya and Lolonya. She then proceeded to the Ningo Prampram District where she also had interactions with fishers from Ahiem, Old Nigo, New Ningo and Prampram.
While commending the Minister for finding time off her busy schedule to call on them, the fishers put forward key issues that they need addressed. These include issues of low enforcement of the fisheries regulations, delivery of premix fuel, access to the right fishing gears in the market and education of children of fishers.
Hon. Afoley Quaye thanked the fishers for opening up on their issues and assured them of her readiness to work towards address the issues raised.
The Minister was accompanied by officials of the Ministry and the Fisheries Commission including the Chief Director, Mrs Gifty Bayira Mahama and the Director of the Fisheries Commission, Samuel Quaatey.
