IMPLEMENTATION OF CLOSED SEASONS FOR INDUSTRIAL TRAWLERS

In accordance with sections 76(3) and 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002(Act 625), the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development  (MOFAD) and the Fisheries Commission (FC) wish to inform all industrial trawler operators that 1st February -31st March, 2017 has been declared closed Seasons for all industrial trawlers.

The objectives of the implementation of this closed season, which are in keeping with Ghana’s Fisheries Management Plan (Marine Fisheries Sector, 2015-2019), are to help in reducing the excessive pressure and over exploitation of fish stocks.

Owners, operators and masters of industrial trawlers are hereby directed to comply with the declared closed seasons. In line with the Fisheries Act, violating this directive shall attract fines ranging from US$ 500,000 to US$ 2 million as well as forfeiture of the catch, fishing gear or vessel to the state.

We wish to also commend all trawler operators for the cooperation and compliance during the November 2016 Closed Season.

Long live the fishing industry!
